The music therapist of the “Iris” Day Center of Amimoni, Konstantina Katostari, participated in the 12th European Music Therapy Conference held from 8 to 12 June 2022 in Edinburgh, with the presentation:

“Exploring and expanding music therapy practices for people with multi-sensory impairment”.

Applications of music therapy with people with blindness, multisensory and other additional disabilities were presented, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and broadening of practices.

Entitled “The line’s course”, 21 representative engravings from the four stations of the artist’s route are presented, as well as three impressive copies of inscriptions from the rich collection of the Epigraphic Museum.

One of the innovations of the exhibition “is the design of a sensory map for people who are on the autism spectrum, as well as the constant presence of an interpreter in Greek Sign Language and an escort for people with visual disabilities”, inform the organizers – MYARTIST (Social Cooperative Enterprise), in collaboration with the Epigraphic Museum, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture.

Other important adjustments to make the exhibition accessible to every person at the same time are that “each work is accompanied by an interpretation through QR codes in Greek Sign Language and International Sign, while there is also an audio description of it by the artist himself. The title, technical characteristics and date of creation of each work will also be printed in Braille.

Gaita

The reference point of the exhibition is the tactile engraving work “Gaita”, suitable, through special lighting, for people with visual disabilities. Also, for the work entitled “Kleisova”, the visitor will be able to see all the stages of its creation, from the engraving to the final print.”

The 21 engravings by Panagiotis Pristouris presented in the exhibition have been selected with the contribution of Afroditis Oikonomidou, Marina Georgopoulos, Liba Berzina, Alexandros Panagiotopoulos and Kyras Papanikolaou. Each curator worked on a specific period of the artist’s visual production, analyzing and evaluating the various phases of his artistic development and maturation.

Short biography of the artist

Panagiotis Pristouris was born in Messina. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts of the University of Ioannina majoring in Painting. From the first moment, engraving and the field of printmaking piqued his interest. He experimented and combined modern with traditional printing and engraving techniques. In 2020, he chose to implement the business idea concerning the convergence of art and cultural accessibility through the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs program in the Italian-Greek cultural organization for education “Microkosmos”. Since September 2020, he has been working as a deputy professor of Visual Arts in Secondary Education, while at the same time he is an active member of the Union of Greek Engravers, as well as the Greek Chamber of Fine Arts. He is active both in Greece and abroad with individual and participatory exhibitions.

For him, the art of engraving is a creative outlet, where vision and observation change, transform and express themselves on the engraving surface in a completely different way than the usual visual perception we have of our surroundings. Each work tells its own story and at the same time is an emotional portrait of him.

The main expected results of the overall project are the following:

• A report on literature review giving emphasis on the family-centered models of early intervention programs relevant to the field of VIAD or D/B and a Needs Assessment Study of families which have children with VIAD or D/B.
• Joint training material for the training of all participating professionals which will be based on literature review and on the extended experience of the partners who will conduct the training events (i. e. Mali Dom and Blindeninstitut München).
• A guide with the best practices regarding methods of early intervention programs for supporting families and young children with VIAD or D/B. This Guide will be designed and integrated during the implementation phase of the ErISFaVIA project.
• Dissemination through project’s website, social media, events, journals and papers, and a policy recommendations and guidelines report which will include recommendations and guidelines for policy makers and stakeholders.

It is expected that all the above will have an impact at personal and social level of all involving partners and professionals.

Amimoni is one of the partners in the project ErISFaVIA (Early Intervention Services for Families with Children with Vision Impairment and Additional Disabilities) which was approved by the Erasmus+ Programme (Key Action 2).

Ten organizations compose the consortium of this project. In specific three of them are universities [University of Thessaly (coordinating organization)/Greece, University Babes-Bolyai/Romania, and Istanbul Medeniyet University/Turkey], two are special schools for students with vision impairment (Liceul Special pentru Deficienti de Vedere/Romania and St. Barnabas School for the Blind/Cyprus), and five are non-profit non-governmental organizations for persons with multiple disabilities and vision impairment (Amimoni /Greece, Syzoi/Greece, Ayse Nurtac Sozbir Gunebakan/Turkey, Blindeninstitut Munchen/Germany, Mali dom/Croatia). The consortium of the ErISFaVIA project consists of researchers and practitioners who combine knowledge and experience regarding early intervention and education for children with vision impairment and additional disabilities.

The main objectives of the ErISFaVIA project are the following:

1. to develop an enriched and updated training material for professionals who work in early intervention programs,
2. to promote the collaboration between universities, schools, institutions and associations of families who have children with vision impairment and additional disabilities, and
3. to highlight best practices and guidelines for the development of effective early intervention services for children with vision impairment and additional disabilities.

It is expected that the outcomes of this project will contribute to developing effective early intervention services, enhancing professionals’ skills and supporting families and children with vision impairment and additional disabilities. In addition, many of the tangible products of the ErISFaVIA project will be uploaded on the project’s portal as Open Educational Resources. In this way, professionals, stakeholders as well as policy makers will be able to have access and use them in order to improve their educational policies, practices, methods and techniques.
