Khalil Al-Safouri is a visually impaired student at the UNRWA Ein al Asal school in Lebanon. Khalil has been visually impaired since he was born. His limited vision greatly affected his academic attainment during his early school years. It was difficult for him to differentiate letters of the alphabet given his vision challenges.

His visual impairment hasn’t stopped Khalil from developing a strong love for knowledge. “I have a strong attachment to education. It is the only way for us to build a better future. There have been great challenges in my path to achieving my goals. But even though I’ve had to overcome difficulties because of my eyesight, nothing will be able to stop me from reaching my full potential,” he says.

One person that Khalil credits for helping him on his journey is his UNRWA school counselor. Mr Abed Albaset Hamoud and Ms. Lina Zeidan Gregularly communicated with Khalil’s parents and teachers. Khalil’s recalls, “I love my school because of the kindness and love my counselor and teachers give me. I also love the encouragement and patience that my geography teacher shows me every day. I love teacher Sanaa, who always plays with me and my friends. This support has helped me tremendously as I face the challenges in my life.”

He adds, smiling broadly from behind his small Braille book, with his glasses polished and his body upright with ambition and clear purpose: “I love to take care for animals and I dream of becoming a veterinarian one day. I want to be the first veterinarian to take care of the animals in the camp. This is my dream even though I have vision problems! I know this will make my dream harder to achieve but I’ve learned that nothing is impossible and nothing can stop a person from dreaming.” He continues, “I am supported not only by my teachers, but also by my classmates! They always make an effort to include me in extracurricular activities. I love the spirit of kindness and companionship I have been shown,” he says.

Khaled, as described by his teacher Ms. Sanaa, is a smart, active and eloquent child. He engages with his friends in his class, discusses and has initiatives. His self-confidence is unique and not typical of children his age. “He really deserves attention and care,” reiterates Ms. Sanaa, “We work hard to help him in any way we can to achieve his dreams.”

Thanks to donors like the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, UNRWA was able to open the doors of its 711 schools across the Middle East on time for all its students. The Agency thanks the Government of Saudi Arabia and its humanitarian arm KSrelief for its support and dedication to Palestine refugee families in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Gaza and the West Bank (including East Jerusalem).

]]> Lifeskills Social Hackathons

 

Organized by Dock and the British Council as part of the Life Skills programme, the Social Hackathon was a two-day event full of knowledge, experiences and teamwork with the young people that took part. The objective of the Social Hackathons was to be a participatory learning and planning process within the framework of Life Skills, a program with a substantial social footprint, which has also offered through its actions 75 paid internships and experiential workshops to over 2,000 young people.

 

Among many important ideas, Amimoni’s team was declared the winner! On Friday, June 30, we met at our facilities in Elliniko with the young people of the group, discussing the next steps to make our idea a reality!

]]> This year’s EASPD  annual conference will take place this June in Tirana and will focus on Family Centered Early Intervention, with many interesting topics and participation from all over Europe.

In the context of the Conference, Agapi Papadaki, Head of Amimoni’s Early Intervention Program, will present the challenges and benefits of the implementation of the program in the child’s natural environment with a focus on strengthening the family.

At the same conference, a workshop will be held for the European Burnout Free Program with techniques to prevent burnout for professionals and parents.

Family-centered early intervention: How to make it work.

June 8-9, 2023 | Tirana, Albania

 

EASPD, Down Syndrome Albania Foundation and UNICEF invite you to their upcoming conference “Family-centered Early Intervention: How to make it work”.

The conference, hosted in Tirana, Albania on June 8-9, will focus on how to build policies and practices in the area of supporting children with disabilities or developmental difficulties and their families.

The conference will address the basics of family-centered early childhood intervention practices and the establishment of national Early Intervention systems. He will also share the outcome of the EASPD and UNICEF joint action on emergency early childhood development for war-affected families.

The conference will be held in English, with Albanian interpretation.

On Friday, April 28, the 8th organization of the weekly educational program “Building an Inclusive School for all” was successfully completed. The European organization EASPD and AMIMONI  were responsible for its organization.

Over the course of a week, professionals of the field from Greece, Europe and the United States got to know the theoretical framework and new tools aimed at developing and promoting inclusive education. The participants had the opportunity to get to know the theoretical framework and new tools for inclusive education in a direct and interactive way. They participated in discussion groups, educational visits and thematic workshops with the aim of discovering together with their colleagues, at an international level, the way to move towards inclusive education, the way to design a “School for All”.

Amimoni gladly welcomed the participants to its facilities in Elliniko on Thursday, April 27, while at the same time our training program was presented as well the European Programs Burnout ECI Project and Stories4all.

We thank  EASPD and Rachel Vaughan for co-organizing this project, presenters Annemie Jennes (VSKO, Belgium), Marleen Clissen (VSKO, Belgium), Wolfgang Plaute (Pädagogische Hochschule Salzburg, Austria), Jezerka Beškovnik (University of Primorska, Faculty of Education) and Andreja Klančar (University of Primorska, Faculty of Education), for the educational experience and the participants for their interest and enthusiasm.

On Wedenesday 11 of January the first live educational seminar of the “Story Making and Reading for ALL” project was completed.

Fifteen professionals working with visually impaired people learned to create digital tactile stories using new technology. The participants had the opportunity to understand the basic principles of storytelling and to create the audio description of each story themselves through experiential activities. At the same time, they became familiar with the editing software and technical terms, and were able to create their own tactile images by following the steps of the guide to convert digital images into 3D tactile images,.

The seminar includeded live training of the professionals while taking advantage of  asynchronous distance learning through the electronic platform https://elearn.stories4all.eu/.

The action was hosted at the 1st KAPI of the Municipality of Elliniko – Argyroupoli and at Amimoni’s facilities in Elliniko.

The Story Making and Reading for ALL (Stories4ALL) project, 2021-1-EL01-KA210-SCH-000031465, KA210/ Small-Scale Partnerships-School Education Sector, Erasmus+2021 is a partnership of e-Nable Greece, MICROKOSMOS and AMIMONI and its ultimate goal is the promotion of creativity and the development of digital skills of teachers with the final recipient being the visually impaired student and the entire educational community.

From 29/11 to 2/12, two special education teachers from Malta as well as the Inclusive Education Officer of the Ministry of Education of Malta, found themselves at our facilities and attended a training, information and familiarization program on visual impairment issues. They were trained in the Seer Guide Technique, in basic eating techniques, attended therapy sessions at the Iris Day Center and discussed many issues that concern them in relation to the educational needs of children and families in their place.

The exchange of know-how, experience and good practices between professionals in the field of disability has multiple benefits with the final recipients being the children who receive their services.
